Health Care Reform

Health care reform can be defined as any type of amendment, addition, removal, and/or any other type of changes to the Health care system. Health care reforms have been proposed and passed for decades. However, there is an even larger amount of proposed reforms that have completely failed. Once again, the health care reform is a popular subject in the world of politics. The Obama administration is steadily trying to reform health care and make the health care system easier for more people to have access to. And as with all proposals, within the government or otherwise, there are going to be a group of people who disagree with it. There are many reasons as to why the health care reform is actually something that is needed and will be very beneficial to the economy and the country.

Medicare was introduced in 1965, by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Since then, there have been many changes and additions to health care. The latest proposal for health care reform was passed and came out in 2010. It is called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The details of this act are to ideally improve the health care system in a few different ways. One of its goals is to make it so that more people can qualify for coverage. This is done by widening Medicaid. Another way is to make employers more encouraged to offer health insurance to employees. Another goal is to get more Americans to buy health insurance. The Patient Protection and Affordable care act is also another way to stabilize the economy and budget because it will decrease our nation’s growing deficit by at least $100 billion throughout the next ten or so years. And it does not end there, it is expected to decrease the deficit by $1 trillion over the next 20 years.

However, there are also some cons to this act. Insurance companies will have to raise their prices in order to accommodate for the greater volume of sick people that need to be covered. Another flaw, is the fact this act does not really focus on the original problem of the cost of health care. It mainly focuses on coverage instead of the high price. All in all, there are many reasons why this act is a good idea. And there are definitely some areas of it that could use some improvement and reconsideration.
