Disadvantages Of Genetically Modified Foods

Production of genetically modified foods has spread rapidly across the world since the mid-1990s but scientists and researchers have discovered that these foods have some disadvantages. The following are some of the disadvantages of genetically modified foods:

The safety of genetically modified foods is unclear because up to date there are no verified records that have been kept to show the effects of genetically modified foods on human health. Short term data, collected from rats fed with these foods, showed health problems in the rats’ stomachs. Therefore, people continue eating these foods without knowing the exact health issues that they may get exposed to.

Genetically modified foods are environmentally unfriendly since they are produced using potent fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides that have adverse effects that are not friendly to the natural environment. These chemicals get their way into the air, the ground and even water sources. The final impact is that the whole environment gets contaminated with toxic chemicals that later also affects the growth of natural crops and animals.

Labeling of these foods is not mandatory as there is no law that necessitates this. It means that people consume food products without knowing whether they are genetically modified or not. This situation puts many consumers at risk of possible adverse health effects of genetically modified foods

Genetically modified foods get injected with new proteins that were not part of the indigenous plants or animals, which cause allergic reactions. These new proteins often cause allergic reactions to the human body because they are not compatible with the natural body system.

Studies have shown that genetically modified foods cause the immune reaction and affect the number of immune system cells. When these foods are consumed continuously, the immune system of the body is likely to be weakened due to the immune reactions.

Genetically modified foods are injected with antibiotics so as to make them resistant to pests, viruses, and diseases, and this decreases the effectiveness of antibiotics. When these foods get consumed, the antibiotic enters the body thus making the actual antibiotic drugs less effective.

Genetically modified foods are produced in unnatural ways that always have long-term adverse effects on the ecosystem and biodiversity. In the long run, these strange ways affect the natural traits of organic crops and animals. For example, there are many butterflies and bees that have already been killed by feeding on genetically modified crops.

Therefore, the disadvantages of genetically modified foods cannot be overemphasized. Must quick measures to control production of these foods or else the whole ecosystem, diversity and health are at a danger.
